Call for papers: The “Excluded Third” in the Co-Production of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam
The European Project ERC Synergy Grant “The European Qur’an” (EuQu) is organizing in cooperation with its scientific partner CORE (Co-produced Religions) a conference to be held in Villa Vigoni, Loveno di Menaggio (Como Lake, Italy) on the 10-13 June 2025.
CALL FOR PAPERS
Judaism, Christianity, and Islam are often understood as an ensemble of three (‘Abrahamic,’ ‘monotheistic,’ scriptural, or prophetic) religious communities and traditions. But often when adherents of two of these “sibling” religions interact, the third is treated as a figure to be marginalized, stigmatized, or instrumentally exploited vis-à-vis the others. Our conference proposes to explore this dynamic of the excluded third.
The conference is organized by professors Mercedes García-Arenal, Davide Scotto and Katharina Heyden, Bern, and David Nirenberg, Princeton.Travel expenses, accommodation costs, and meals at the Villa Vigoni from 10 to 13 June 2025 will be covered by the projects.
The submission deadline for proposals is June 1, 2024.

The project is coordinated by Katharina Heyden, Professor for Ancient History of Christianity and Interreligious Encounters at the University of Bern (Switzerland), and David Nirenberg, Director and Leon Levy Professor at the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton (U.S.), and includes a network of collaborators across North America, Europe, and the Middle East.
The goal is to provide the foundations of a new history of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam as co-produced communities, a history that makes clear the many different ideas and ideals that each of these communities has formed, and continues to form, by interacting with or imagining the others.
